Eclectic & Colorful Guest Room Reveal

After living in our current home for nearly 2 years, I can finally say the guest room is done! Check out the reveal of our eclectic and colorful guest room.

Hi friend! I’m so excited to report that we finally have a completely finished guest room. I have lots of photos and details for you. There is a complete source list at the bottom of this post for you 🙂

If you are a regular around here, you know that I originally started giving our guest room a makeover BEFORE we even moved into our home. We had the walls painted Sherwin-Williams Pure White and had the carpet replaced with hardwoods to match the rest of the house right before we moved in. That alone was a big transformation from how this room started out (see below).

But then it sat stagnant for a while. We didn’t even have a bed since we used the bed from the guest room in our old house in Avery’s new bedroom, lol.

Finally last November I needed to do something to prepare the space for a visit from my mother-in-law. So we made this really cool DIY headboard with customizable messages (one of my favorite DIY projects ever), added a gorgeous run, bought a mattress and platform bed, repainted the dresser to fit the space better and even hung up a bit of artwork. It was a huge improvement! But it definitely wasn’t finished.

Well friends, I finally, finally, finally finished this space! Let’s take a look at what still needed to happen:

  • The blank space above the bed needed to be addressed in a way that wouldn’t compete with the headboard itself.
  • The room needed some accent lighting so that the overhead pendant light wasn’t the only lighting option.
  • The room needed some more textural interest and some plants (always plants, lol).

So here’s what I decided to do:

I ordered these really inexpensive sconces to hang above the bed (you can find lots of my favorite sconces here). This served 2 purposes. First, it would serve as the much-needed accent lighting. Second, I knew it would help fill in the blank space above the bed without competing with the cool headboard. We did not hardwire the sconces. Instead, I used these screw-in puck lights that turn on and off with a remote.

I played around with what to hang above the bed and in between the two sconces. I quickly decided that: 1) I wanted it to be a photo and not an art print and 2) it needed to be long and rectangular in shape. After brainstorming I decided to have a panoramic photo that I took of Joe and the girls’ on our vacation this summer framed. I used Framebridge for the first time and it was the PERFECT solution. This was NOT sponsored or gifted by the way. I loved that I was able to completely customize the finished size, the frame AND I was able to have the most beautiful custom plaque added to the bottom of the frame. It’s one of my favorite things in the room! This is the exact frame that I ordered.

I also added this Pottery Barn dupe lamp to the painted dresser for another accent lighting option. This lamp is so affordable and SO GOOD.

Last but not least, I brought in more textural interest by hanging some gorgeous embroidered pieces that my late grandmother handmade on a small section of wall in between the closet and guest bathroom. I also moved this basket in from our family room, but I’m not sure whether it will stay in here or not. I love the idea of a large basket here, but think a basket with fewer colors would look much better in here.

And of course, I added plants 🙂
